Ferdinand Carl Scheer

Ferdinand Scheer
b. 16 Mar 1853, d. 26 Feb 1933

Ferdinand Fredrick Carl Scheer was born on March 16, 1853, in Neumark Germany to Johann Scheer and Wilhelmine Zoepp. He married Albertine Koehler in 1878 in Germany. They left Hamburg for the United States with daughter Bertha and son Franz (Frank) on June 3rd, 1883 and landed in New York later in June 1883. Ferdinand applied for citizen ship on November 1st, 1886.

German History lesson: The Prussian province of Brandenburg (or Mark Brandenburg) located east of the Oder River was known as the "Neumark" (in English: New Mark). It was referred to as the Neumark because it was settled later than Brandenburg, which was located west of the Oder River. It was also referred to as East Brandenburg. Following World War II, under the terms demanded by the Soviet Union in the Potsdam Agreement in 1945, the region was put under Polish administration and eventually became part of the Lubusz province of western Poland. Most Germans who lived in Neumark were expelled and Poles settled in the region. (Some of the Poles moving in had themselves been expelled from the Polish Radachowo area annexed by the Soviet Union). A small part of the German population, mostly technicians for the water supply companies, were retained and used for compulsory labor; they were allowed to emigrate to Germany in the 1950s.

In 1878, Ferdinand married Albertine Koehler in Germany. They had two children while living in Heidekavel, Germany: Bertha Louise and Franz (Frank) William.

More history: Heidekavel Germany was also annexed by Poland after WWII, and the name was changed to Radachowo. It's located about 150 miles northeast of Berlin, Germany and is within the Lubusz province mentioned above.

Ferdinand and Albertine immigrated to the United States and settled in Green Lake Center, Wisconsin, where they farmed and raised nine children. Their tenth son, Paul, died as a baby.

Ferdinand died of heart trouble on February 26, 1933, in Green Lake, Wisconsin, at the age of 79, and was buried there. His death is recorded in a church record at St. John's Lutheran Church in Markesan, Wisconsin. The record states that Ferdinand was born in Jagersburg, Germany in contrast with other documentation that states his birthplace as Neumark, Germany. Jagersburg is in the Southwest part of Germany, near France.
